Kubernetes is a software platform that I love for its potential to render your choice of cloud provider obsolete. The cloud provider within the cloud provider, in theory if not in practice.
After you have mind-melded with the abstractions that Kubernetes provides it all makes sense. The demonic pact you have made is with one of the more powerful and “open” pieces of software. Anything is possible on kubernetes.io
In comparison learning the abstractions of databricks quickly starts to feel like entertaining a small child who wants to show you their Unity Catalog (is it like a data pokedex? That’s lovely darling). That small child is valued at $43 billion (Sept 2023).
My perfect end-state for kubernetes would be for all hobbyist end-users to be able to operate their own vertically-integrated software stack, full of open source monitoring, networking, auth, etc. Slamming the “Build” button over the “Buy” button every time, confident in the knowledge that the stream of Helm chart updates will ensure their necessary two nines of reliability.
